The Canton Railroad Company owns right-of-way within Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Cecil County, Maryland.

The corporate roots of the Canton Railroad Company stretch back almost 80 years before it was formally chartered in 1906.  Its heritage is intertwined with Baltimore’s development as an important American port city and railroad terminal and the evolution of the original Canton Company.  In turn, the efforts of the Canton Company to promote itself and make a profit in real estate enterprises contributed greatly to the growth of Baltimore and its port.

The Canton Railroad Company has several locations near the federal highway transportation systems (I-95) and (I-895). If needed, the Permittee must adhere to the Federal Regulations regarding Airspace Guidelines 23 CFR 710.405 – 710.407 and the Federal-Aid Policy Guide, 23 CFR 713A, Subchapter H, Right of Way, and environment, Part 713, subparts A and B. These regulations outline the requirements for using land acquired for federal highway routes. This may include entering into an “Airspace Agreement” with the Maryland Transportation Authority or the City of Baltimore.

PERMITS, OCCUPANCY AGREEMENTS AND LAND LEASES

The Canton Railroad utilizes the services of a professional railroad property management firm, ReLTEK, LLC, to manage all outside party uses of Canton’s rights of way and property.

Such uses commonly include:

·      Occupancy agreements for installation of utility lines such as gas, oil, sewer and water pipes and electric, CATV and telecommunication cables under, over or along Canton property

·      Land lease agreements for “boots on the ground” utilization of Canton property for ground storage, parking, building encroachments and other footprint type occupancies on Canton property

·      Agreements for fencing, neighborhood beautification and boundary line clarification

·    Right of Entry agreements where temporary access to railroad property is needed (take nothing but pictures, leave nothing by footprints) for survey work, inspections or access to adjacent property

·    Grade crossing agreements for vehicular or pedestrian crossings over Canton property and tracks

FLAGGING REQUEST  

Railroad flagmen ensure the safety of crews working on or near a railroad track during construction, repair, and maintenance projects or who have the potential to obstruct the railroad’s right of way.  Railroad flagging is not just a recommendation but a mandatory safety measure whenever a Project is within 20 feet of Canton’s tracks, underscoring the seriousness of our safety protocol.

Railroad flagging personnel are the guardians of safety, providing a secure environment for Canton personnel, equipment, passengers, and facilities from work being performed and protecting CANTON operations to parties working within Canton’s right of way.

Project Examples

  • Surveying within 20′ of the tracks
  • Boring under the tracks
  • Bridge inspections
  • While working over the tracks (on a bridge or with overhead utility lines)
  • 20 feet within a railroad signal facility
  • 20 feet within a grade-crossings
  • Tracked equipment operating over at-grade-crossings
  • Sweeper truck being used at-grade-crossings
  • In or near a grade-crossing (on foot)
  • Removing obstructions within 20 feet of the tracks
